Making a Will

What is a Will?

A Will is a document that sets out a number of things, such as who you would like your estate to pass to and in what proportions.  It also deals with important other matters such as who will administer your estate, funeral wishes, who is appointed to look after your children and legacies to people or causes that are close to your heart.

What happens if I don't have a Will?

Many people have incorrect assumptions about how their estate will pass if they don't have a Will.  If you die without a Will, the Government has set out how your estate will pass which may not be as you wish.

Solo parents and making a Will

Making a Will as a solo parent is even more important.  This is because there is not another parent who automatically has care of your child(ren) after death.  Solo parents need to think about:-

  • Guardians - who will be conferred parental responsibility to care for the child(ren) until they reach 18,
  • Trustees - who will manage your assets for your child(ren) until they meet the age stipulated in your Will.
  • Structure of your estate - how your estate will be structured to best care for your child(ren) and whether trusts are going to be relevant and, if so, what type of trust.
