Egg donation is when a woman chooses to give one of her eggs to help someone else have a baby. The intended parents then use the egg with their own or donated sperm to go through the process of assisted conception to create their own family. The egg is then used through IVF by the future parent(s).
For more information about egg donation, please contact HFEA.
No, unless you have informally agreed to carry a child for someone using your own eggs. Informal agreements are plagued with issues regarding ongoing care of the child, inheritance rights etc so we strongly recommend a formal agreement is entered into before conception. The rights under an informal agreement would usually end once the intended parent(s) have adopted the child.
For donation through a licensed clinic, for children born after 1 April 2005, they are entitled to apply for information about their genetic heritage. You may want to consider leaving further information about you, your life and photos as part of your Will and estate planning for any child born via your egg donation to request after your death.
